Highways Agency should acceed to M6 protesters demands say Lib Dems

Liberal Democrat councillor Ian Shires is calling on the Highways Agency to accede to all the demands agreed by an all party group of councillors in connection with a controversial plan to cut congestion on the M6 by opening up the hard shoulder between J8 and J10a.

The demand comes in the wake of an article in last night’s Express and Star where it was reported that a representative of Carillion, the Highways Agency’s contractor, admitted the proximity of homes between J10 and 10a had not been taken into account.

“The least that The Agency should do is to accede to all our demands” said Ian. “They’ve admitted the mistake so it’s up to them to put it right” he concluded.

This would include no Emergency Rescue Area being sited near to residential property, the current fencing to be replaced by a new acoustic fence, and a mixture of evergreen and deciduous trees replacing those ripped out by contractors earlier this year as well as a whisper surface along the hard shoulder to reduce noise and an assurance that crash barriers would adequately protect nearby properties.

A further meeting is due to take place between councillors and The Agency on Monday 15th June.
