Is There a Glimmer of Hope for Willenhall’s Leisure Centre?

Walsall’s Tory cabinet meets on Wednesday at 6pm in Conference Room 2 Walsall Council House. The main issue will be the rubber stamping of the “Draft Budget” Proposals which have been doing the rounds of the Scrutiny Panels since cabinet last met.

On three occasions the Liberal Democrats tried to get a resolution through scrutiny expressing concern at the prosed closure of Willenhall Leisure Centre. On three occasions they were out voted by the Tory majority on each of the scrutiny panels.

The Lib Dems did manage to find one chink in the Tories armour when Corporate Scrutiny Panel agreed last Friday, to ask cabinet to consider a resolution from Willenhall Local Neighbourhood Partnership (LNP) calling for a stay of execution for the leisure centre to allow Scrutiny to look at why unit costs at Willenhall were higher than other centres across the borough. At the same time scrutiny were to be tasked to look for ways to increase the income of the centre in much the same way as was done for Bryntisilio.

The user groups of Willenhall’s Leisure Centre are going to have to wait till Wednesday to find out whether or not the Tory Cabinet is prepared to listen.
