Demands for Action to Stop Further Trees Being Felled on M6

Plans to remove further sections of fencing along the M6 to the north of the Lichfield Road in Willenhall came to light earlier today reports Liberal Democrat councillor Ian Shires.

The news was broken to Ian by the liaison officer from Carillion, the contractor working for the Highways Agency on this stretch of the Traffic Management Project on the M6, ahead of a regular information briefing due to take place tomorrow.

The removal of the fencing is to allow drainage work to be carried out along the hard shoulder. “At no stage till now have we been made aware of the need for this work. What makes matters worse is that it would appear that further trees and shrubs will need to be removed to link the new drainage to the “french drain” at the bottom of the embankment.

“I am furious about this latest piece of mis-management by the Highways Agency” said Ian. “Just before Christmas I received a letter off Graham Dalton, the Chief Executive of the Highways Agency, assuring me that procedures had been put in place to stop this sort of thing happening.”

Ian has written to Mr Dalton requesting a meeting to discuss this the latest fiasco in the long running M6 saga. Ian has also asked for an urgent meeting with senior highways officers at Walsall Council in an attempt to put pressure on the Highways Agency to think again about the need to remove further trees.
