Meeting on Monday 24th January to discuss snow problems

During the recent snow and icy conditions our Liberal Democrat Focus teams have received many comments from concerned residents about the council’s lack of flexibility in the way in which it has dealt with what have been unprecedentedly circumstances.

So concerned were Liberal Democrat councillors on Walsall Council they have called for and got an item on the forthcoming Environment Scrutiny Panel to review the performance of the current winter maintenance policy in order to hold the Cabinet to account and try to force through changes to address the concerns that have been raised.

We have already started compiling a list of the questions we want answered – these take into account the points already raised by residents. However, if any other residents want to forward concerns or questions you can email me at shiresi@walsall.gov.uk please include your name and address.

The meeting will take place on Monday 24th January 2011 in the Council House at 6pm.

1)I heard from a friend that the schools meals van girls have not missed a delivery in 12 years; they work out the same depot as the bin men. If they can get out then so can the bin men.
2) I saw the recycling bin lorries out working, but not the general waste wagons – again, if they can get out, why can’t the others? (that was in Leamore, by the way)
3) the traffic/parking control wardens were out working on 27th Dec; why wasn’t the rest of the council back at work?
4) the snow has gone now (wednesday) but the streets are not being swept – why not?
5) why are all the leisure centres and libraries closed over the holidays, just when people are off and want to use them?
(don’t say there’s no demand – Fitness First in Walsall Wood was open and the car park was full while Oak Park Leisure Centre on the other side of the road was locked and shuttered)
