Demands for Urgent Action on Changes to Greenspaces tidy up Practices

A change in the way in which Walsall’s Tory controlled council picks litter from greenspaces appears to be having the same adverse effect on land off Pennine Way as that reported last week on Coppice Farm Way says Liberal Democrat councillor Ian Shires.

The Short Heath Lib Dem Focus team were out delivering the latest edition of Focus in the Stroud Avenue area on Sunday and were struck by the amount of litter stewn around the open space between the Brackendale shops and Edsbury Close. “It’s obvious that there’s been a change of procedure” said local activist Dan Barker.

Investigations last week on similar complaints from the Coppice Farm area in New Invention identified that litter picks are now the responsibility of Waste Management and green spaces are now only tied up on a fortnightly basis. This change of policy was taken centrally without reference to local residents through the Area Partnership.

“So much for the councils claim to be committed to Area Partnerships” said Dan. “These are the very issues which have a direct effect on local residents and they should be consulted on any proposed changes in policy.”

Dan and the Short Heath Team are joining forces with the Willenhall North Focus Team in calls for site visits and urgent talks with Street Pride bosses.
