Fast Food Free for all at Brackendale shops?

It now looks as though Walsall’s Tory administration is about to lift restrictions applied to lettings on the Brackendale Shopping Precinct, Stroud Avenue, Short Heath, without the assurances of a proper business plan as demanded by local Liberal Democrat councillors.

This could lead to fast food takeaways taking over all of the empty units operating till late at night seven days a week and at Bank Holidays as the private landlords say that this is the only interest being shown by would be operators.

This might be great for some who want the convenience of readily available fast food, but not so great for those living nearby who will have to put up with the smell, litter and anti social behaviour associated with such operations.

Short Heath Liberal Democrat councillors were prepared to work with local residents, the council and owners to secure a relaxation of the current restrictions banning fast food takeaways on the precinct in an attempt to reach an acceptable compromise.

By doing this it would have been possible to restrict the number of takeaways, to set acceptable opening hours, set up systems which would have dealt with the issues of anti social behaviour and demanded a plan to improve the appearance of the shops, delivery arrangements and the surrounding area.

As it is, the actions planned by the Tories will leave residents open to the vagrancies of a slack planning system.

Are you part of the same Liberal Democrat party that is in coalition in Westminster. There will be minimal planning restrictions once bills presently going through are passed. You can’t shout at the tories for implementing a policy that the cleggites have been part of.

Under the Coalition agreement local people would have had an input into the future of the Brackendale site.

Walsall Tories chose to bypass local demands for a business plan to ensure that resources would be made available to tackle issues such as anti social behaviour, future maintenance and improvements to delivery arrangements to the rear of the shops by ignoring local opinion and taking a unilateral decision through the Council’s cabinet system. A system which was forced on Walsall MBC by a Labour Government.
