Difficult Times – Call for Co-operation

by Ian Shires on 9 November, 2012

Independent and Labour councillors along with residents and business, have been invited to share their ideas for Walsall’s future.

Liberal Democrat council group leader Ian Shires said recently “These are exceptionally difficult times for all local councils, and as the Tory/LibDem coalition running the town is a minority administration, we clearly wish to work co-operatively along with residents and business, with the Independent and Labour councillors to reach agreement on the 2013/14 budget if at all possible”.

Ian made the call for co-operation shortly after the launch of the town’s biggest ever budget consultation. “It is really important that as many people as possible take the opportunity to understand the enormous task the council faces in trying to balance the books” said Ian. “The ideas contained within the draft budget proposals are just that – ideas. Nothing has been decided. This is a genuine attempt to work together to help protect front – line services and look  for better, more cost effective ways of providing those services”.

Adverts have been placed in the local press. Exhibitions are touring the borough and the full consultation exercise is available on the council’s website.

The discussions have started and will continue right through till the special council meeting on the budget in February in an attempt to put together a balanced budget for the future of Walsall which everyone has had a chance to contribute to.
