Six long term empty properties face compulsory purchase action……

by Ian Shires on 14 April, 2014

140202 MT Lichfield RdSix long term empty properties across Walsall are to be added to a growing list which could see their owners facing compulsory purchase orders issued by Walsall Council, two of the properties are in Willenhall and one, 139 Lichfield Road, is right here in New Invention.

Back in December 2013 the Lib Dem/ Tory Coalition through its Cabinet agreed a policy aimed at stopping this blight on our communities and ultimately to get properties which, in spite of the council’s best efforts, remain empty and have been so for more than five years.

The owners of these properties have failed to respond to requests from the council to clean up their sites and take steps to bring much needed housing back into use.

Empty properties are a blight on our communities, they attract rubbish, vermin, overgrown gardens and unsecured premises which in turn attract anti social behaviour such as drug taking, vandalism and arson. All of these issues bring a negative impact not only on appearances but on the health and well-being of residents.

Cabinet are due to debate the report on the 30th April and will also receive an update on progress with the first seven properties which were actioned following the cabinet report in December.

Liberal Democrat Focus Teams across New Invention and Short Heath have asked officers to investigate three other long term empty properties in Druid Park Rd, Treetops Drive, Newant Close and Lynwood Close.
