Lib Dems only group on Walsall Council in favour of flying the Saltire

by Ian Shires on 17 September, 2014

140130 Break Up Of The UnionWalsall Council seems to be one of the few councils in the West Midlands who have not flown the Scottish Saltire alongside the Union Flag outside its Council House in a bid to show our Scottish friends that we do not want them to leave the Union.

All of the party leaders on Walsall Council were asked for their opinions on a request to fly the Saltire to show solidarity in support of Scotland staying in the Union.

As the only leader agreeing with the request Lib Dem Cllr Ian Shires said “I can only think that the other three leaders, Labour, Tory and UKIP, in some way support the break up of the United Kingdom. I find that sad. If the Scottish people vote tomorrow to leave the Union we will all be worse off.

“Flying the Saltire costs little or nothing but would have said so much to the many Scots who live in the borough. They might not have a vote in tomorrow’s referendum but they all will have kin who do. If things turn out to be as close as they appear to be, every vote will count. I just hope that we don’t live to regret this small mindedness.”
