Liberal Democrats responing to your calls for improved road safety

by Ian Shires on 20 October, 2014

SURVEYFeedback from Willenhall Liberal Democrats Summer Survey is driving  our campaign to improve road safety across the Willenhall area.

Many of your responses to the survey made reference to the speed of traffic on our main roads. As a result your Liberal Democrat councillors have been working with local police and highways officers to look at what can be done in the short, medium to long term to improve things.

20's PlentyMajor east/west; north/south routes through the area are being monitored and some local schools are raising pupils awareness of the dangers that exist on many of our roads. In recent times Liberal Democrats on Walsall Council have promoted the use of “Twenty is Plenty” zones for residential roads. It hasn’t been easy, in fact we were met with opposition from some other political groups on the council.

The new zones we have succeeded in establishing on the Broadway, Summer Hayes and Lucknow areas are characterised not having speed humps. Some have said that the 20 mph speed limit is being ignored and true there are those motorists of all ages who are but observation has shown that the vast majority are travelling at lower speeds through these areas.

Fact is that those who have changed their driving habits are feeling the benefits in their pockets from improved fuel economy.

HGVBack to the summer survey, as well as speed the numbers of HGV’s on our roads was of major concern to some who sited the poor state of many of our through routes as a result. Some of the routes through our area suffer from narrow footpaths and road widths which increases the shear physical presence of some of these Juggernauts not the least of these being the Cannock Road with two schools and a busy GPs surgery in very close proximity to each other.

Liberal Democrats have launched a campaign to heighten road users awareness by creating a “School Zone” in the area with increased road signs road markings and surface treatment.

If you live in the New Invention/Short Heath area of Willenhall we would welcome any help or support you can give to make our roads safer for all users. Use the “Contact” buttons above or come along to one of our regular weekly surgeries. Together we can make our area better.
