A number of readers have commented about the difficulties they are having due to the road works around Darlaston and Pleck. This email I received today explains what the issues are and what made a bad situation worse.

“Firstly let me apologise for any inconvenience you have encountered over the last week due to the road closures, it’s not the Council’s intention to prevent you from accessing Darlaston town centre to shop.

Last week a sewer collapsed along Willenhall Road, this was nothing to do with the Darlaston major highways scheme, but unfortunately the sewer collapse was on the actual diversion route. Severn Trent Water came out to repair the sewer, but have been unable to without excavating the whole road up.

Walsall Council very reluctantly closed a section of Willenhall Road to allow Severn Trent Water to excavate and reconstruct the sewer. The result of this has been that an extension of the diversion route has had to be implemented for a short period of time.

Work was completed on Tuesday and the road was re-opened at 9pm. The diversion has now reverted back to the original route.

With regards to the scheme, the reason for the dual road closure is to ensure that the improvements to the area can be delivered within the budget. Walsall Council doesn’t have the budgets to deliver a scheme of this size by itself and has been provided a grant from the Department for Transport. Very simply if we don’t close both of the roads and allow the works to run simultaneously then the construction work would likely continue for 3 years and would be unaffordable.

Bentley Road South (railway bridge) will reopen in April 2015 and Bentley Mill Way will be reopened in November/December 2015. I appreciate this isn’t the news you wanted to hear, but Walsall Council and its appointed contractor Dawnus Construction Ltd are doing everything they can to get the roads re-opened as soon as possible.”
