Labour plan to cut Council Tax Support by 25% to almost 20,000 of Walsall’s poorest residents

by Ian Shires on 18 December, 2014

Walsall Labour CouncilRegular readers will recall that we reported that Walsall’s Labour Cabinet were set to debate the issue of what to do about the “Localised Council Tax Reduction Scheme” for 2015/16:

On the night there was no debate, just a statement off the Labour Social Care Chief about it not being an easy decision to make. She went onto say that it was all the fault of the Coalition Government because of the £86 million cuts Walsall Council has to find over the next four years. No mention of the part the last Labour Government played in creating the deficit in the first place

She then put forward the following option to be recommended to Council:

  • Option 1. Reduce the benefit by 25% The Council would still need to find another £5.4 million to fund it. Claimants would have to pay more Council Tax.

In putting forward this recommendation Labour will be hitting some 15,160 working age claimants. The total number of working age claimants is 19,676, of these 4,516 are disabled who are automatically protected as are 15,271 pensioner claimants. The cost of fully supporting all claimants is £7.7 million.

  1. When will the coalition parties stop whinging about what they took over. Mr Osborne and Mr Alexander made it very clear, in 2010, that the deficit will be clear by 2015 and from then on in the borrowing will reduce. They based the plan on what they were told, by others, were unrealistic growth forecasts.Pish they said – you know now what you do because you crashed the economy. And guess what – Balls was not speaking Balls. Osborne and Alexander were – but did not change the plan to reduce tax for the weathiest 1% in society for they claimed that such a reduction would increase tax revenues. Balls was not speaking balls; Osborne and Alexander were clearly speaking bo**ocks.
If the previous coalition in Walsall had left a medium term plan you would be able to tell us what it said. Three months out of office and you have forgotten the plan – or was it of the Osborne/Alexander variety?
You should still have the copies of your coalition plan. It will take five seconds to cut and paste and a further five to confirm that it is accurate. It may be a good investment ready for next May for I fear that the wider electorate might not look too closely at things and just assume that they were governed by those specialising in bo**ocks.

I cannot agree with the language used but the chap did ask what was the plan if you were still in office. You are enigmatic in response. If we can’t see the plan we cannot be blind

We get a weekly list off CENTRO with notifications from the private bus operators of any changes they are planning. Haven’t seen anything up to yet indicating any changes as yet. Will get onto CENTRO to see if they have heard anything on th grapevine.
