UKIP Cuts defeated as Lab/Con fudge keeps libraries under threat of closure

by Ian Shires on 27 February, 2015

A strange night last night. First UKIP produced an alternative budget proposing bigger cuts to Adult Social Care, Children’s Services, Job Creation and Regeneration than even Labour were proposing. There Leader then had the nerve to attack Labour cuts not long after.

new_inventionThen ‘love’ broke out between Labour and the Tories, and they disappeared into the bowels of the Town Hall for 45 minutes to work out a marriage of convenience complete we assume with a prenuptial agreement. The blushing brides emerged to declare they were going to forget about 2016/17 and beyond, and just concentrate on being happy over the coming year. So really, it didn’t matter if you voted Labour or Tory in last year’s local elections – you ended up with the same budget; one that did not protect libraries beyond the coming financial year.

We remained unconvinced by these nuptials and proceeded to unveil our alternative budget that did, amongst other things, have a long term plan to protect our libraries. As expected, we got no support. The Tory leader even suggested that libraries should only be kept for those with the loudest voices. We believe that every child in every part of the borough should have access to a local library where amongst other things they can access computers to do their homework. Labour and the Tories have shown by their actions last night that they don’t share this view something voters need to remember when they go to vote in May!
