The day our Community Green came of age

by Ian Shires on 30 March, 2015

150119 WW1 2This weekend saw the unveiling of the World War One Memorial on New Invention’s Community Green, a fitting milestone in the short history of our our village green. Ten years ago it didn’t exist.

The dream of a “village green” came out of a visit to my brother and his family in Strongsville, Ohio, USA back in 2006. Instead of doing the “big ticket” tourist stuff we visited small town America in and around  northern Ohio. The one thing that struck us was the strong sense of community that existed, and virtually every community had its own village green.

We now have a centre piece for the community green, a place where local people can reflect on the sacrifice of those who set off to fight for a cause and never came back. Without them we wouldn’t have our freedoms today.

The memorial is a replica of a marble plaque which stood inside New Invention Methodist Church on Lichfield Road. The church closed and amalgamated with others in the area. Its last act was to find a resting place for this memorial to those from New Invention who gave the ultimate sacrifice in the 1914-18 War.

The permanent home for the marble original has yet to be decided. It was never designed for outside, it wouldn’t have weathered well, hence the need for a replica.
