Walsall on a knife edge after the Local Elections

by Ian Shires on 6 May, 2016

Civic CentreWalsall is always interesting. Three of the twenty seats up for grabs at yesterday’s Local Elections changed hands. Independent Pete Smith lost his seat in Blakenall to Labour then Labour lost a seat to the Tories in Bloxwich West. The one which is going to make a difference is St Matthews where the Tories deselected their sitting Councillor Arif then went and lost it to Labour.

When all the votes had been counted it became clear that the Tories had lost their tenuous grasp on power as the Parties came out as follows:

  • Labour:     28
  • Tories:       25
  • Ukip:            3
  • LibDem:      2
  • Ind:              2

This leaves the Council on a knife edge which could leave contentious issues being decided on the Mayor’s casting vote.

The Liberal Democrats have all but ruled out any deal with the Tories for a variety of reasons. These include the totally uncaring attitude of the current Tory Government with its continued austerity measures which they feel is leading to the destruction of Local Government and local democracy.

“Only twelve months ago these self same Tories were campaigning for a majority Tory Government. Well that’s what they got” said LibDem Cllr Ian Shires 2so it’s no good the outgoing Leader of Walsall Council saying he doesn’t agree with what his Government is doing to local councils.”

Couple this with need to form some sort of a rainbow coalition with Ukip and the thing becomes unworkable.

Tentative talks will begin today with Labour to see if there is any common ground on which we build a workable majority.
