GMB Condemns use of French Steel for TRIDENT Nuclear Submarines

by Ian Shires on 7 October, 2016

The Government does not seem to understand that there is a crisis in the UK steel industry says GMB

GMB, the union for workers in the steel industry, has commented on the news that submarines for the Trident Successor Programme will be built using French steel. The use of British Steel on the project would have protected the jobs of thousands of UK steelworkers.

The Government has named French firm Industeel as Defence Secretary Michael Fallon prepares to symbolically cut a steel plate today at the shipyard in Barrow-in-Furness.

Dave Hulse, GMB National Officer, said:

“This Government doesn’t seem to understand that there is a crisis in the UK steel industry. The Steel Council and even the Government itself recommended new procurement rules so UK steel companies would be on a level playing field when tendering for contracts.

“Once again our members have been betrayed by a Government that seems to be completely unwilling to put its money where mouth is to protect British jobs.”
