Brown Jug – Lib Dem call for decisive action

by Ian Shires on 28 January, 2017

The owners of the former Brown Jug pub site have reacted to last week’s site visit organised by Willenhall Liberal Democrats. The downstairs windows at the front of the building have been boarded up.

170128-brown-jugThis is to little, to late as far as the Lib Dems are concerned. “The owners were written to by the council last June/July time demanding that the building be demolished and the site cleared. They have not complied and as far as we are concerned the next steps should be court action.” said Short Heath Lib Dem Cllr Dan Barker.

“The latest attempt by the owners to secure the building is pathetic” said Short Heath’s Lib Dem Focus Team Activist Ben Hodges. “The site next to the Brown Jug which became to be known locally as the Spanish Villas  is now nearing completion having being taken over by new owners. This makes the re development of the Brown Jug site all the more important” said Ben.

Liberal Democrat Group Leader on Walsall Council Cllr Ian Shires said “Land owners need to step up to the plate in situations like this. Sites like the former Brown Jug on Sandbeds Road are an eyesore and a blight on this part of Short Heath. As a council will do all we can to help developers where it’s in the best interests of the local area. But it takes two to tango and if developers aren’t prepared to act in a responsibly then we feel that the council should go aggressive and take all action possible including compulsory purchase to get a good outcome for local residents.”

To finish on a brighter note.

The houses on the site next to the Brown Jug eyesore are nearing completion.

This site had remained with partially built properties on it for a number of years. Last year a new developer stepped in and the result is clear to see. Well done them…..

Could you please give some information on the housing development near to completion. When will they be available?

    • Ian Shires says:

      Hi Neil
These houses have been a long time coming and it’s good to see them now progressed through to completion. This site is a private development so I can’t answer your question without making some enquiries first. Give me a few days to ask questions and I’ll get back to you. If you haven’t had an answer by midweek can you get back in touch with me.
      Kind regards
      Ian
