Improvement starts to major link to Willenhall Town Centre

by Ian Shires on 9 April, 2017

Work has begun on much needed maintenance to a section of a major route through Short Heath to Willenhall Town Centre. The works to Coppice Lane and Lucknow Road from the Amery Island through to Spring Lane is being done in two phases.

The first phase began on the 6th April and will continue to the 11th April. This phase of the works will see localised kerb repairs and carriageway patching carried out on worn out stretches of this busy route linking the north of Willenhall to the town centre.

There was some disruption to the free flow of traffic and pedestrian movements this morning (Sunday) due to the need for one-way traffic controlled by temporary lights. In fact, for at least part of today Knightsbridge was closed to through traffic and diversions were in place. Once again the 41 bus route has suffered major disruption

Phase two of the work takes place during May and will see the carriageway resurfaced with micro asphalt for the whole of its length from the Amery Island through to Spring Lane. Traffic management arrangements will be in place whilst the second phase of the work is being carried out.

Welcoming the work Liberal Democrat Cllr Ian Shires said “This should bring to a conclusion a long period of disruption for residents in the area and for motorists following as it does work done on behalf of the Gas and Water Agencies”.

Work continues on Spring Lane where footpaths and kerbs have been renewed ahead of putting in the permanent traffic calming measures and resurfacing the whole carriageway.

Willenhall Liberal Democrats will continue to press for improvements to other routes through the area which are showing the effects of wear and tear. This includes Essington Road sections of the Lichfield Road, High Road, Lane Head and Sandbeds Road.

Hear what you say Kanta but unfortunately due to cuts in Grants to local council’s by Mrs May’s Tory Government cash is very tight and we are having to concentrate what little cash we have on replacing worn out major routes. Lucknow Road has been ravaged in recent years by major vital renewal work to replace old water and gas mains in the area. This work has been done by contractors working on behalf of the Gas company and Severn Trent and has added to the deterioration of the road surface.
Walsall Housing Group and CENTRO have not helped either in that they have been less than helpful in finding a suitable place to relocate the bus shelter in front of the precinct.
The project has not been forgotten but there are other things that need scarce resources more I’m afraid.
      Thanks for your continued interest.
