I see that our new Conservative MP for Walsall North has posted a graphic on Twitter claiming an NHS funding increase of £7.5 billion. What he doesn’t say is that only £2.8 billion of that is new money announced in the Autumn Budget 2017.
Three health trusts, the Health Foundation, the Kings Fund and the Nuffield Trust had earlier this month said that the NHS needed £4 billion next year to get it on a stable footing.
The extra cash announced by the Chancellor Phillip Hammond in this week’s budget actually comes in two tranches, £1.6 billion in 2018/19 and £1.2 billion in 2019/20. The new money levels off fast after that and the NHS will once again be up the creek without a paddle.
