West Midlands Fire Service – Public Consultation

West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA) will be carrying out a public consultation on whether West Midlands Fire Service (WMFS) should be run by the WMCA in the future.

The public consultation, starts on 11th January and runs until March the 8th. It follows an independent appraisal of how WMFS is currently run and governed.

Following this appraisal it was felt the WMCA would be the best option in helping the fire service meet its overarching vision: Making the West Midlands Safer, Stronger and Healthier and meet government expectations of the fire sector and other blue light services.

Benefits of moving under the Combined Authority include a more joined up way of working with local authorities, health providers and the police, while having a shared vision for the region.

In addition, public services will be delivered at a reduced cost in a more coordinated, integrated and collaborative way.

If the changes were to be agreed, the Mayor of the West Midlands Andy Street, would become the single point of accountability for the fire service and the Chief Fire Officer would report directly to the Mayor.

We would like your support to assist in publicising the public consultation with colleagues and constituents.

The consultation questionnaire and corresponding background documents can be accessed by visiting https://www.wmca.org.uk.

Paper copies of the consultation will also be available at a number of public locations, including Civic Offices. It can also be downloaded from the WMCA website. We need to hear your voice and the voice of all of our communities to set our direction and governance.

To find out more, you will have the opportunity to attend any of the information session which are being carried out at the following venues:

Diners can now relive the sinking of the Titanic at the launch of a series of themed evenings planned by dementia specialists, Mindful Gifts CIC based in Darlaston.

The first event, which takes place at :

  • Gio’s Community Kitchen Walsall,
  • Venue Ryecroft  Hub 40 New Forest Rd, Walsall WS3 1TR

Diners will be given actual biographies of second class surviving passengers.

They will not only enjoy the same meal as passengers had the night of the sinking but there will be events that will take place that will make them feel they have participated in that journey.

During the meal the film ‘Titanic Love’ will be screened. Local producer Mark Presdee made the film and it has been shown internationally.

Vicki, founder of Mindful Gifts CIC said “I’m really excited about this event. It’s great that the film can be shown in the Black Country and fits in perfectly with the dining experience as it’s all about us ‘having our own Titanic Moment!’ “.

Although ‘boarding’ tickets have been snapped up, a few tickets are still available through contacting Mindful Gifts CIC on 01922 495994, email mindful.gifts@yahoo.com

Walsall Works Expo on Thursday 15th March 2018

Walsall Works will be hosting the Walsall Works Expo on Thursday 15th March 2018. Our events are quite popular and we expect to seeing over 1500 attendees on the day. Every year we endeavour to try and do something a little different and this is no exception! The Event will see 3 events combined into one day!

Apprenticeship Event will be held to support the next generation of school leavers supporting attendees in making informed decisions regarding their chosen career field and explore what’s available locally. Training providers offering courses and apprenticeship opportunities, this is an invitation only event extended to schools within Walsall area, however you are welcome to exhibit.

Walsall Works Partnership Event will serve to recognise those performing in line with their social value and providing opportunities to local residents. The event will highlight any potential opportunities that can be supported through the Employment & Skills Team. The event, sponsored by Calderdale College, will also run a series of presentations to showcase the ESF funded ‘Skills for the Workforce programme.  The presentations will be conducted during lunch time with the aim of educating and informing employers on a number of different support packages to support employment & Skills within their organisation while providing the opportunity to celebrate success of the ‘Walsall Works Partner Awards’.

Walsall Works Expo from 12.30-5pm:  will be the largest recruitment events to be held in our locality during 2018. The event is an interactive event open to local residents of all ages, introducing 1000’s of apprenticeship, training and employment opportunities.  Local residents (benefit claimants and non-claimants) will have the opportunity to meet with employers and providers to gain an understanding of the opportunities on offer. Training providers and employers will be able to meet with local residents and introduce their offer through interactive formats thus allowing attendees to trial various trades to see if there are areas they wish to explore further as career option.

The event expects to host between 80 training providers and employers on the day.  The purpose of the event is to support employers and local residents in the lead up to summer 2018, while providing suitable avenues for those due to be leaving university, college or school. Event activity will support objectives within a number of projects to include: Walsall Works, View Programme, City Deal and BC Impact.

I have attached a copy of the Walsall Works expo for your further information, if this could be passed on to our fellow colleagues that would be great.

Hard copies are available if needed for notice boards and are we are seeking to attend most community venues.
