Funding increase for police announced by the Home Office nothing more than smoke and mirrors exercise
Additional funding up to £970 million, including £509 million from council tax flexibility will go towards recruiting more police officers claims the Home Secretary Sajid Javid.
The provisional police funding settlement of up to £14 billion for 2019-20 is up to £970 million more than the previous year.
There are 43 police forces across England and Wales, if the increase were to be shared equally (highly unlikely) that would work out at around £23 million extra for each force. To put that into perspective the West Midlands has seen its budget cut by £175 million since 2010.
To make matters worse, only £161 million of the extra funding will come from Government grants householders are going to have to fork out the rest in the form of extra contributions to the police precept which will have to be collected through Council Tax. You couldn’t make this stuff up!
