Former Willenhall Gas Works to be removed from Contaminated Land Register.

by Ian Shires on 20 January, 2019

On Monday evening I was asked to a meeting with the Chief Executive of Walsall Council to be informed that the land on which the former Willenhall Gas Works stood was to be removed from the Contaminated Land Register.

I was asked to hold back on telling anyone until the council had informed the residents of the Stonegate and Trent Park Estates directly affected by this long running ordeal.

On the face of it this would appear to be good news, bringing to a close over a decade of a living nightmare. Never the less since the news broke in the press a couple of days later, residents have said they have many questions that need answering.

The Council has invited all those directly affected to a meeting at the Council House following the special meeting of the Cabinet on Wednesday and I would ask that as many as possible should attend so that they ca voice their concerns. I have attached a link to the paper being presented to the Cabinet:-

It’s important that we allow the residents to absorb the news, and decide what actions they wish to take. The last thing they need is politicians trying to make political capital at their expense, though judging by the front page of the Express and Star the other day, that horse may have already bolted.
