Opinion: Special educational needs
In its editorial, the Guardian says that as the proportion of special educational needs children in alternative schools continues to rise, ministers should also focus on boosting inclusion.
It says councils’ dedicated support budgets have been stretched beyond breaking point, while the number of children assessed as having special needs has increased to form 14.6 per cent of the school population. In December, the LGA predicted a £1.6 billion funding shortfall for children with special educational needs and disabilities by 2020/21.
