Row rages over heartless Tories

by Ian Shires on 10 August, 2019

A row is raging over controversial plans by Walsall Council’s Conservative administration to pay carers who provide support to elderly and vulnerable residents in the borough, by the minute.

Walsall Council’s Leader Cllr Bird (Conservative) has said he refuses to budge on the issue. This is in spite of several care providers saying that they will have no alternative but to take less work in Walsall. A move which will put many vulnerable people at risk.

Cllr Bird said that his Conservative administration had to make savings in the face of further reductions in funding from central government. Here in Walsall North we have a Conservative MP, Eddie Hughes who, since being elected to Parliament, has consistently supported Government cuts to local authority funding.

Given that Cllr Bird’s Deputy and fellow Pheasey Park Farm Ward Councillor, Cllr Andrew is also Eddie Hughes’s Constituency Manager and that prior to becoming an MP Eddie Hughes had served under Cllr Bird as Cabinet member for Social Care, you would have thought that our local MP would have been shifting heaven and earth to get more funding for local government and especially Social care. Instead, it looks as if he has concentrated entirely on Brexit to the exclusion of all else.
