Responding to the Conservative Government defeat tonight, Leader of the Liberal Democrats Jo Swinson said:

We cannot let Boris Johnson use an election to tip the country into a dangerous no deal Brexit, which neither the people nor their representatives support.

We do relish the opportunity to fight an election, and we are confident that we would make significant gains. Yet stopping No Deal is the priority and in the best national interest. Therefore, we will not support an election until Article 50 has been extended.

The Liberal Democrats are doing everything we can to prevent Boris Johnson’s disastrous No Deal plot, and to stop Brexit altogether. This includes putting the national interest over party interest at this crucial time.
