Walsall Manor Hospital

by Ian Shires on 13 November, 2023

The past couple of months have, for me, been the stuff of nightmares. As someone who has enjoyed relatively good health most of my life to suddenly find out that something potentially life threatening is happening to you can only be described as earth shattering.

It all started back in August following a blood test which showed a dramatic drop in my haemoglobin count. It transpired I had bowel cancer. What has happened since then has reenforced my faith in our NHS.

I was admitted to the Manor Hospital Walsall for tests where a full body scan identified a tumour in my colon. On the 10th October Mr Muhammad Tayyab and his team operated on me to remove the tumour. What began as routine keyhole surgery ended up as 9 hrs of more invasive surgery. My thanks go to Mr Tayyab and his team for giving me a fighting chance going forward,

I also want to thank everyone in the NHS who had an input into my care, from the paramedics who responded to our 999 call back on the 23rd September and everyone at Walsall Manor Hospital. In particular I want to thank those involved in my care in the Emergency Department, and on AMU, Ward 29, and Ward 20.

And it doesn’t end there. The ongoing care I have received through the Colorectal Nurse Specialists, the Community Nurse, Outpatients and the services at our GP practice, the Sina Health Centre, New Invention cannot be faulted. I consider myself very fortunate to live in a country where there is a health service free at the point of delivery and we should do all we can to ensure that continues to be the case for all our sakes.

Praying for you, Ian. You are, indeed, very lucky to not have to worry about going bankrupt with co-pays and medical bills. Believe me, Obamacare is partial, at best. We have an “Advantage Plan” That supplements Medicare, but still have co-pays. If we see a specialist, it’s bigger. When Irwin was in the nursing home, he was on Medicaid, which paid the $6,000 plus a month just for the room.
MOST Importantly, we hope you’re feeling better and on the mend. And Doreen, also, hope she’s well. Hopefully we’ll be able to see you next year. Bob is fighting prostate cancer right now. I’m okay, at the moment.
Love you both very very much. Sally

Hi Sally, Thanks for your support and kind words. Your comments about health care in the US add context as to why keeping the private sector out of our NHS is so important. Best wishes to you and our thoughts are with Bob in his fight against prostate cancer. Speak soon Ian and Doreen xx

Wishing you well on your full recovery
