Consultation now open on proposed modifications to Local Plans

Walsall Council has today launched a six week consultation period on the last stage in the production of two key Local Plans for the borough. The consultation will end at 5pm on Monday 9 April. This consultation allows interested parties to have their say on the modifications proposed by the Government Planning Inspector following an examination in public on Walsall Site Allocation Document (SAD) and Walsall Town Centre Area Action plan (AAP), which took place in Autumn last year.

The modifications are being proposed by the Inspector in order to make the plans ‘sound’. Soundness covers issues such whether the plans are meeting the needs of the area, if they are supported by appropriate evidence and also if they are consistent with national policy. The Consultation responses will be provided to the Inspector to review before he makes his final recommendations on the plans in a report.

Following the Inspector’s recommendations the Council will look to adopt both plans later this year. This will mean they will form the basis for future planning decisions. The SAD and AAP both look to allocate land to meet the future needs of Walsall, providing opportunities for homes, jobs and facilities in the most sustainable locations to meet our community’s needs and therefore form a crucial basis for future investment in the borough. They also seek to protect the environment, identifying assets to be conserved.

The Council encourages all interested parties to get involved in the consultation and to submit representations on the modifications if they feel the changes would not make the plans sound. Details on the consultation can be found at www.walsall.gov.uk/planning2026

Finally the Council would also like to thank everyone who has engaged with the previous consultations stages on the two plans and would encourage the continuous involvement in planning policy as we continue to plan to meet the future needs of Walsall.
