Bentley Lane resurfaced – was the resulting grid lock and confusion worth it?

by Ian Shires on 16 May, 2016

MicrosurfacingVsMillNFill-954x458The jury is out on whether all the grief and hassle over the weekend with two road closures over the weekend in Short Heath was worth it or not.

The closure of Bentley Lane at the same time as Lucknow Road was closed was always going to be controversial with the two diversion routes converging as they did on Lane Head Bridge, caused the predicted confusion resulting at times in grid lock.

Bentley Lane was closed because Walsall Council had scheduled a much needed resurfacing of this major link to Walsall and the M6. A few weeks ago patching of the worst areas of cracking in the surface was carried out. Had the work not gone ahead as scheduled it would have been next year before another chance would present itself.

The work this weekend was to put a sealing surface over the length of Bentley lane from Birchtree Hollow to Bloxwich Lane. The contractors used something called micro asphalt which is a halfway house between full asphalt and tar and chip and was designed to take out the worst of the bumps on this notorious piece of road.

I took a trip down the newly surfaced section of road and have to say it is still a bit lumpy in parts but a vast improvement on how it was. See what you think and let us know.
