Help needed to bring fire damaged property back into use

by Ian Shires on 31 January, 2012

Liberal Democrat councillor Ian Shires has called for security to be stepped up to give efforts to bring back into use an empty property on the Lichfield Road, New Invention next to the M6.

The property has twice been the subject of fire damage and became the subject of enforcement action last year following an intense local campaign to remove this blot on the local landscape.

New owners have taken over the property and work began to restore the property for residential use at Christmas. “This work is being hampered by continued vandalism” said Ian. “We are asking for temporary CCTV to be sited in the area until the work is sufficiently advanced to have its own permanent system up and running.”

Ian has also called for the disgusting mess in and around the  alleyway which runs alongside the property cleaned up.

isn’t it up to the owner to keep his property safe and secure?
you’d better not go spending any of my council tax money on looking after a large, detatched 4-bedroom private residence.

  2. Ian Shires says:

Martin, have you seen the disgusting state of the alleyway that runs alongside this property? The CCTV would be used to tackle this problem, giving the alleyway back to those who use it for the legitimate reasons. The new owner intends to install security systems which would include protecting the public right of way. What do you suggest is done? Any serious suggestions will be welcome as doing nothing is not an option and is costing us all a great deal of money.

Cleaning up the alley is what “street pride” are there for, isn’t it?
Isn’t it generally accepted that if you keep an area looking good, it stays looking good, but if you neglect it then it degenerates?
If the rubbish was cleared regulalry then it would no longer be an eyesore and it wouldn’t attract more rubbish.
If councillors and officers actually put some effort into exisiting systems maybe we’d be a bit better off?

Martin have you actually been along that alleyway? The levels of anti social behaviour and the results of that are way beyond regular maintenance by Streetpride. to complicate matters most of the rubbish that has been dumped is on “Crown Land” so already you will see that there is more than one Agency involved. Clearing up peoples rubbish costs council tax payers over £1million a year, money which could and should be spent on other things like looking after older people, education and tackling crime to name but a few. The work currently being put together by the Area Partnership manager is designed to tackle the cause of the crime being committed. If you would like to help please give me your details so I can point you in the right direction. You might like to spend a day with me to get to know what a typical day of mine is like, and before you say it I’m not complaining, I enjoy what I do and always do it to the best of my abilities. Look forward to seeing you.
